House Approves $14 Billion Bailout

And now, it's on to the Senate:

A $14 billion rescue package for the nation's imperiled auto industry sped to approval in the House Wednesday night, but the emergency bailout was still in jeopardy from Republicans who were setting out roadblocks in the Senate.  [...]

The legislation, approved 237-170 by the House, would provide money within days to cash-starved General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC. Ford Motor Co., which has said it has enough to stay afloat, would also be eligible for federal aid.  [...]

But the measure faces a difficult road in the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to advance. Rank-and-file Senate Republicans skewered the bill during a closed-door luncheon with White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, who was dispatched to Capitol Hill to make a case for the rescue package.

And if the Senate rejects the bill? From Bloomberg News:

The U.S. House has no plans to come back if the Senate rejects a $14 billion auto bailout bill,
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said. Asked last night immediately after the House approved the auto bill whether she would bring the House back to Washington for further work if the Senate doesn’t approve it, Pelosi responded, “No.”

“We have yielded on almost every point in order to get a signature for the legislation,” she said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “So while you never say never, but the fact is, I think it’s important for the Senate to know that this is a strong bipartisan bill and this is what the White House had agreed to” earlier this week.

They certainly have. And so, the ball is in the Senate's court. Stay tuned.
